The Fitness Market in Poland – Growth, Challenges and Opportunities for International Collaboration

By REPs POLSKA

The fitness and wellness industry in Poland has undergone significant transformation over the past decade. Today, it stands as one of the most dynamic and rapidly developing markets in Central and Eastern Europe. With a population of over 38 million increasingly focused on health, longevity, and active lifestyles, Poland offers both strong growth potential and unique challenges.

A Growing and Evolving Market

Physical activity in Poland is no longer a trend — it has become a part of everyday life. More and more people are engaging in regular exercise, not only to improve their physical appearance but also to invest in long-term health and wellbeing.

The market is highly diverse and flexible. It includes over 3,300 fitness clubs and gyms, primarily located in major cities such as Warsaw, Kraków, and Wrocław. In addition, there are approximately 61,000 sports and wellness facilities across the country, including boutique studios, yoga and Pilates centres, physiotherapy clinics, and functional training spaces.

An estimated 60,000 to 80,000 instructors and trainers are actively working in Poland, often across multiple locations and frequently as freelancers. This reflects the dynamic nature of the industry but also emphasises the necessity of clear professional standards.

New Trends: From Fitness to Wellbeing

One of the most visible and positive trends in the Polish market is the rapid growth of Pilates, yoga, and mobility-based training. These forms of activity are no longer niche offerings; they are now an essential part of many clubs and studios.

At the same time, there is a strong and growing focus on active ageing. More individuals over 40 and 50 are seeking structured, safe, and effective ways to remain active. This shift reflects a broader change in mindset — from short-term fitness goals to long-term health, injury prevention, and quality of life.

Customers today expect more than just access to equipment. They are searching for holistic experiences that combine movement, recovery, and wellbeing. This evolution is pushing the entire industry toward more conscious, safe, and professional practices, which include integrating wellness programs, personalised training, and enhanced customer service to meet these evolving expectations.

Market Challenges

The Polish fitness market, despite its rapid development, encounters several significant challenges, many of which are common across Europe.

The industry includes both highly qualified professionals and a growing number of individuals entering the market without formal education, certification, or registration. This creates risks for client safety, challenges for fitness clubs, and impacts the overall credibility of the sector, as clients may receive inadequate training or guidance from unqualified individuals.

Historically, the profession of fitness instructor in Poland was regulated by the state. Until 2010, approximately 90% of instructors held official certifications. Following deregulation, the market expanded rapidly, but without a unified system to ensure quality and competency, leading to concerns about the qualifications of fitness instructors and the overall effectiveness of fitness programs offered to the public.

Today, the need for:

  • clear and consistent qualification standards

  • responsible, modern education

  • and stronger systems of professional validation

has become more important than ever.

The Role of REPs Polska

REPs Polska was established in 2014 as a response to these challenges.

Its mission is to improve the quality of services in the fitness industry by:

  • registering qualified instructors and trainers

  • promoting client safety

  • supporting professional standards and ethics

REPs Poland provides a system that allows professionals to distinguish themselves through verified competencies — not just declarations, which enhances client safety and ensures adherence to professional standards and ethics.

The organization is part of an international network that collaborates with bodies such as the following:

Through these partnerships, REPs Poland integrates international standards into the local market and contributes to the global recognition of fitness professionals.

Building the Ecosystem – Cooperation with Poland Active

An important step toward strengthening the Polish market is the collaboration between REPs Poland and Poland Active.

Poland Active brings together fitness clubs, studios, and industry stakeholders, focusing on the following:

  • market data and analysis

  • development of fitness services

  • This cooperation promotes public health and physical activity through lifestyle-oriented initiatives.

  • lifestyle-orientated initiatives

This cooperation connects professional standards with real market needs, helping to build a more integrated and trustworthy ecosystem for clients, instructors, and employers.

From Challenges to Solutions

At REP Poland, the approach is not to criticise the market but to provide practical solutions.

These include:

  • certification and registration systems that clearly identify qualified professionals

  • This includes education that is based on key industry standards, such as active ageing, safety, and responsibility.

  • support for fitness clubs in recruitment and quality management

  • development of clear and transparent competency frameworks

The Importance of International Collaboration

The challenges faced in Poland are not unique — they are shared across many countries.

This is why international cooperation is essential.

By working together, organisations, education providers, and fitness clubs can:

  • improve client safety

  • strengthen professional pathways

  • build trust in the industry

  • and create unified standards that support long-term growth

Looking Ahead

The Polish fitness market is full of potential. It is growing, evolving, and becoming more conscious and quality-driven.

However, its future depends on:

  • continued development of professional standards

  • stronger cooperation between key stakeholders

  • and active engagement with international partners

Invitation

REP Poland invites international organisations, educators, and industry leaders to collaborate, share experiences, and build common solutions.

Because only together can we create a stronger, safer, and more professional global fitness industry.
